 ***For Immediate Release***

With increased communication, technology, travel and trade, planet earth seems smaller every day.  But why is nationalism rising globally at the same time our everyday lives have become more international?  What are the public and personal consequences of 21st century globalization?

Borderless, the new series by Jersey City Theater Center (JCTC) at Merseles Studios, opens February 3rd and runs through March 24th, explores the social, political and personal dimensions of this very topical issue.  Like previous JCTC series – Justice, Happiness, Origins, Identity and Vanity – Borderless utilizes multiple art forms to examine a topic global in scope but relevant to the lives of everyone in our community.

Borderless brings a diverse array of new and emerging voices to JCTC audiences with a comprehensive range of art, theater, readings and performances.  In addition, with a new administration in the White House intent on changing national policies on immigration, nationality and globalization, Borderless is a theme whose current relevance is nothing less than inescapable.

“Twenty five years ago we were tearing down walls, filling the people everywhere with hope,” said Olga Levina, Artistic Director, JCTC. “What has happened in our world today that so many virtual and real walls are being built to divide us.”

Using multiple art forms that tackle issues of our times is an essential component of the JCTC’s mission.  It is no accident that during the contentious 2016 presidential election, JCTC developed a thematic series about the impact of globalization.  What may be surprising is that as a new administration takes power in the U.S., issues of immigration, border security and identity have only become more dominant in the news.

“We have to remember that our country was built by immigrants and our diversity is our strength,” said Levina.  “With Borderless, we’ve have artists, writers and actors from many different cultures.  Fear of the other drives us to accept divisions in society – of class, race and who we chose to love – and this series shows us the need to overcome borders that are not just geographical, but personal and psychological.  JCTC encourages a dialog with our audiences and community and this conversation is urgently needed.”

On February 3rd, the Borderless Art Show opens at Merseles Studios.  Doors open at 6:00pm with artist reception. At 7:30pm, an Artist Talk  is followed by performances and previews of other Borderless events. Curated by Lucy Rovetto, Visual Arts Coordinator, JCTC, Borderless features 14 artists, many of whom will be exhibiting for the first time at Merseles Studios. Not only do these artists come from a range of cultural backgrounds – and ages – the mediums used are both diverse and innovative, including: collage, painting, print-making, multi-medium assemblage, and a screen-printed wall, a uniqueform of installation art known as “Printstallation.”

“Artists in this show are thinking very deeply about what globalization is doing on both a social and individual level,” said Rovetto. “Many believe in an optimistic future with a continued breakdown of racial, political and sexual boundaries, but walls seem to be coming down just as fast as they seem to be going up. It’s remarkable to see how these artists have internalized their reaction to cultural changes. Artists realize that art must have no borders.”

Borderless Artists: Luis Alves, Jerome China, Stuart Bruce-Noble, Paul Di Zefalo, Eileen Ferara, Dustin Grammanta, Jang soon Im, Frank Ippolito, Qori Moorehaul, Hirah Park, Copie Rodriguez, Gregg Rosen, Rod Sanchez, Steve Singer, Nerissa Tutiven, Anthony Wills, Jr, Muhammad Zaman.

The Borderless Art Show begins a series of two months of events, which includes the debut of the first annual Jersey City New Play Festival, presented in Partnership with The Writers Theatre of NJ, a series of New Play readings as well one-person shows, multimedia musicals, and No Peeking Theater, a Jersey City based Theatre Company known its immersive theater experience that uses multi-sensory story telling.  Borderless concludes with The BOX, a showcase of music, spoken-word, poetry and performances on the Borderless theme. Borderless includes free and paid events.

Outpost in the Burbs Presents Dar Williams in Benefit Concert

Friday, March 3rd, 2017, Montclair, NJ

NEWS RELEASE

MONTCLAIR, N. J. -- Outpost in the Burbs presents Dar Williams [NY] in a Benefit Concert for the Outpost on Friday, March 3rd, 2017 at 8 p.m.  Opening for Dar Williams will be Trevor Gordon Hall [PA].  This concert will take place at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation, 67 Church Street.

Dar Williams is one of the most lauded singer/songwriters of her generation. Her poignant lyrical commentary and beautiful musical arrangements have entranced the music world for more than two decades. Every new album from Dar Williams represents her thoughts and feelings about both her own life and larger forces in the world. But her ninth studio record, Emerald, marks a particularly dramatic confluence between her experiences and broader contemporary culture—and what it means to be a songwriter at this moment in history. In the past few years, Williams has been involved in a wide range of different efforts and projects: teaching a course titled “Music Movements in a Capitalist Democracy” at her alma mater, Wesleyan University; working with children at several summer camps; leading songwriting workshops; getting involved with the workings of her village; and writing a book about the ways she’s seen towns becoming more independent and prosperous over her twenty years of touring.

Rated one of the top 30 guitarists in the world under 30 years of age, by Acoustic Guitar magazine, Trevor Gordon Hall is an instrumentalist from Philadelphia whose compositions range in style from edgy driving rhythms to soft melodic phrases. Trevor sets himself apart by leaving no physical aspect of the guitar untouched and weaving together different textures into grand, yet intimate and lyrical compositions. aspect of the guitar untouched and weaving together different textures into grand yet intimate and lyrical compositions.

This talented team, made up of weaver Virginia Hinchman of Hackettstown, NJ and the spinners Kerstin Katko of Long Valley, NJ and Anne Choi of Bedminster, NJ are all experienced in “Sheep to Shawl” competitions that are held around the country.  At these events, teams start with shearing a sheep and then spin and weave the fleece to win the top prize.  Mrs. Choi is also the owner of Middle Brook Fiberworks in Bedminister, NJ where she teaches spinning and other fiber classes.

“‘Garden State’ was developed to show the many ways that farmers in New Jersey utilized all the materials and technology at hand to support their families,” said Deborah Farrar Starker, Executive Director of METC.  “This demonstration will show that even a simple garment like a shawl requires tools, skill and time to create.  We hope that guests walk away with knowledge and appreciation for what goes into the shawls that keep us warm during the Winter.”

Outpost in the Burbs Presents Robert Ellis in “New Voices” Series

Saturday, February 25, 2017, Montclair, NJ

NEWS RELEASE

MONTCLAIR, N. J. -- Outpost in the Burbs presents Texas-born singer-songwriter Robert Ellis in a “New Voices” show on Saturday, February 25th, 2017 at 8 p.m.  This concert will take place at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation, 67 Church Street in Montclair. Opening the show is Courtney Hartman.

Robert Ellis has named his new album after himself and the reason is clear.  The album is both his most personal statement yet and a summation of his career thus far.  Robert Ellis opens with "Perfect Strangers," a meditation on what brings people together (and how tenuous that connection can be), and ends with "It's Not OK," a raw look at emotional compromise.  Between those two powerful bookends are nine other songs that set Ellis's soaring vocals and knowing melodies against his sharp, dark observations, and that show him in full command of a vibrant set of songwriting skills-irony, distance, character, narrative, a thoughtful relationship between sound and sense.

About Courtney Hartman (of Della Mae): With just six songs, it’s astonishing how Courtney Hartman’s debut solo recording tells such a vivid story.  'Nothing We Say' is flush with intimate ruminations on her life as a traveling musician and a deep curiosity about the world around her. The luminous EP, delivers on the promise always apparent in her work as a guitarist and songwriter for Della Mae, the Grammy-nominated string band, along with her collaborations with Bryan Sutton, Jim Lauderdale, and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ Mike
Campbell, among others. Acoustic Guitar Magazine lauds Courtney as a “distinctive guitar stylist...and a songwriter that delights and disturbs.”

About the “New Voices” series: “New Voices” presents emerging or “indie” musicians to the Outpost stage, exposing audiences to exciting new or unfamiliar artists.

How to Get Tickets: Tickets: $25 in advance, $28 at the door and are available at Keil’s Pharmacy, 732 Valley Rd., Upper Montclair, 973-744-2113; Studio042 – Super Business Printer, 423 Bloomfield Ave., Montclair, 973-509-7591; and on TicketLeap: https://outpost.ticketleap.com/robert-ellis-2017/dates/ Feb-25-2017_at_0800PM

Outpost in the Burbs Presents “Spero Plays Nyro” by the Christine Spero Group

Friday, February 10, 2017, Montclair, NJ

NEWS RELEASE

MONTCLAIR, N. J. -- Outpost in the Burbs presents “Spero Plays Nyro” by the Christine Spero group, an evening of music by the legendary songwriter Laura Nyro, on Friday, February 10th, 2017 at 8 p.m.  This concert will take place at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation, 67 Church Street.

“Christine Spero and I shared a bill and I knew that she was doing attribute to my old friend Laura Nyro, but I wasn’t for just how amazing Christine’s performance turned out to be." - Steve Katz (Blood,Sweat and Tears and the Blues Project)

In this heartfelt and moving tribute to Laura Nyro, one of the greatest and most covered songwriters of the 20th century, pianist and singer Christine Spero and her group take the listener on an unforgettable journey through some of Laura’s most memorable songs.  The show and new Cd, “Spero Plays Nyro” remind us that Laura’s music is poignant and timeless.  The arrangements are hip, the vocals are beautiful, the musicianship is stellar. The exquisite arrangements are true to Laura’s originals but with many sweet creative touches, beautifully interpreted in the group’s own distinct style.  Christine has fully recaptured Laura’s spirit and passion with beautiful renditions running the breadth and depth of Laura's emotions.  Christine has loved Laura's music from a young age when she was given Eli and the Thirteenth Confession by a radio DJ friend.  She was inspired by Laura's music to be bold in writing, singing, and playing piano.  Laura Nyro was the quintessential singer/songwriter and pianist whose groundbreaking music crossed the genres of folk, rock, and jazz.  She became one of the most covered artists in the 1960's and 1970's with such songs as “Eli's Coming,” “Stoned Soul Picnic,” “And When I Die” and “Wedding Bell Blues.”  Her tragically premature passing in 1997 shocked her fans and in 2012 she was inducted into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame.

Drummer Peter O'Brien and bassist Scott Petito create a rhythm section that keeps the music driving and steady but never imposing.  Saxophonist/percussionist, Elliot Spero, adds excellent sax solos, flutes and multiple percussion accents.  The group has performed at many Festivals, Performing arts centers, Dinner theaters, clubs and private events.

Christine Spero, Winner and Finalist of the USA Songwriting Competition Jazz/category, had her start in the music business as a teen with legendary producer Don Kirschner and Neil Sedaka.  She earned numerous accolades for her melodic, emotionally powerful and soulful writing and performing and her two CDs, "We Call it Music" and "My Spanish Dream" have received strong press from USA Today, Long Island Newsday, Billboard, JazzTimes, JAZZIZ, All About Jazz, Time Out New York, The Village Voice and the Albany Times Union.  You can find TCSG streaming on Pandora, Jango, Spotify.  CD’s and Downloads available on iTunes, Amazon & Cdbaby w/ MDI Distribution.

Christine is a very talented woman and I'm so glad she did such a beautiful job with my sister's music" - Jan Nigro Brother of Laura Nyro

"Christine Spero blew away any elitist music critic prejudices I may have had about a singer/songwriter devoting an entire evening's performance to covers of another artist.  This woman has a lover's touch on piano, a jazz master's vocabulary and a vocal splendor perfectly matched by a band that is nothing short of breathtaking" – Albany Times Union, The Saratogian, Troy Record, Nippertown

How to Get Tickets: Tickets: $25 in advance/$30 at the door, available at Keil’s Pharmacy, 732 Valley Rd., Upper Montclair, 973-744-2113; Studio042 – Super Business Printer, 423 Bloomfield Ave., Montclair, 973-509-7591; online at https://outpost.ticketleap.com/spero-plays-nyro-2017/dates/Feb-10-2017_at_0800PM
